COMMENTS: TECHNICAL REPORT ON THE HARRISON SERIES 12 RE-RECORDING CONSOLE. DE LANE LEA POST PRODUCTION FACILITIES, DEAN STREET, LONDON W1.

INTRODUCTION AND CONCLUSIONS.
WE WERE COMMISSIONED TO TEST THE HARRISON S12 FILM RE-RECORDING CONSOLE INSTALLED IN THEATRE 2 AT THE DELANE LEA POST PRODUCTION FACILITY, DEAN STREET, LONDON.
OUR TESTING WAS PERFORMED ON VARIOUS DAYS IN DECEMBER 2009 AND JANUARY 2010, FOLLOWING A PERIOD OF INACTIVITY RESULTING FROM A FIRE IN AN ADJACENT BUILDING ON JULY 19TH 2009. THE DEGREE OF TESTING WAS BASED ON OUR PROFESSIONAL JUDGEMENT AND THE METHODS EMPLOYED WERE BASED ON STANDARD PRACTICES APPLIED AS WE DEEMED APPROPRIATE. THESE TESTS AND THE RESULTS OF OUR TESTING ARE BRIEFLY DESCRIBED IN THE FOLLOWING PAGES.
BASED ON THE FOREGOING, IN OUR OPINION THE CONSOLE SURFACE AND THE AUDIO PROCESSING ARE IN WORKING CONDITION, WITH RELATIVELY MINOR FAULTS COMMENSURATE WITH THE AGE OF THE CONSOLE THAT ARE UNRELATED TO THE FIRE OF JULY 19TH, 2009

INITIAL TESTING
POWERED UP THE HOST SYSTEM MACINTOSH COMPUTER, AND APART FROM AN "IFFY" VGA CONNECTOR, ONCE THE SYSTEM HDD HAD WARMED UP, EVERYTHING STARTED RUNNING CORRECTLY. POWERED UP THE CONTROL SURFACE IN THE DUBBING THEATRE, (AND BECAUSE 110V HAD BEEN INSTALLED), ALL THE SMALL LOCAL PSUS WERE WORKING AND THE SURFACE SAW THE CONTROLLING SERIAL SIGNALS, SO EVERYTHING CAME UP ON THAT AS WELL.
THE BARGRAPH METERS NOT POWERED YET.
THE AUDIO POWER SUPPLIES WERE LOGICALLY STACKED UP AND CONNECTED TO THE EXECUTION AND MONITOR RACKS AND POWERED UP. ALL CAME UP CORRECTLY, SAW SERIAL COMMANDS AND BOOTED CORRECTLY. (PSUS WERE STACKED UP BECAUSE NO RACK WAS AVAILABLE, BUT ALL THE CABLES ARE STILL IN UNDER THE FLOOR)
CHECKED CONSOLE FOR MECHANICAL AND ELECTRICAL OPERATION. 1 BAD DEAD SHAFT. 6 STIFF ONES, ALL IN CLOSE PROXIMITY, PROBABLE DAMAGED OF HAVING SOMETHING DROPPED ON THEM.
ALL FADERS ARE WORKING, NO INCORRECT TOUCH OPERATION, SOME ARE SHOWING THEIR AGE BUT ARE NOT UNUSABLE AND DO NOT REQUIRE REPLACEMENT. CHECKED ALL OMRON SWITCHES; THERE ARE NUMEROUS SWITCHES TO BE REPLACED. ONE ROW OF SWITCHES ON ONE PANEL DO NOT WORK (PROBABLY) BECAUSE OF A BROKEN DECODER DRIVER BOARD, OR THE PANEL ITSELF.
THE JOYSTICKS DID NOT FUNCTION CORRECTLY, FURTHER INVESTIGATION IS REQUIRED TO ASCERTAIN THE EXACT CAUSE OF THIS PROBLEM. AGAIN, THE RELEVANT DECODER DRIVER BOARD MAY WELL HAVE FAILED.
THE SURFACE IS STILL IN EXCELLENT CONDITION, AND BELIES ITS 12 YEARS AGE. IT HAS BEEN WELL LOOKED AFTER, AND WHILST SHOWING SOME FAILINGS COMMENSURATE WITH THIS AGE, THESE FAILINGS ARE EASILY RECTIFIED, ALBEIT SOMEWHAT TIME CONSUMING.
S12 AUDIO PROCESSING TESTS.
ALL OF THE BACKEND PROCESSING SEEMS TO BE RESPONDING TO COMMANDS FROM THE HOST MAC COMPUTER. ALL OF THE DIGITAL CONTROL BOOTED UP CORRECTLY AND APPEARS TO BE WORKING.
I USED A REAL-TIME ANALYSER ON A PC AS THE METERING INITIALLY. THIS WAS INTO A CREATIVE SOUNDBLASTER AUDIGY CARD AND A FULL VERSION OF "TRUERTA" AS THE ANALYSER. THE CONSOLE PINK NOISE WAS BUSSED OUT TO ALL BUSSES AND THESE WERE MEASURED AND COMPARED WITH THE SOURCE PINK NOISE BY THE RTA. (THIS PROGRAM ALLOWS THE COMPARISON OF ONE SIGNAL AGAINST ANOTHER).
ALL OF THE BUSSES MEASURED CORRECTLY IN TERMS OF OVERALL LEVEL AND MATCHED THE SOURCE SIGNAL TO WITHIN ± 1.5DB IN TERMS OF FREQUENCY RESPONSE.
I THEN SENT THE SOURCE SIGNAL TO EVERY CHANNEL ONE BY ONE WITH THE FADER SET TO UNITY. THE SIGNAL WAS SENT TO EVERY BUSS FROM EVERY CHANNEL INDIVIDUALLY AND THESE MEASURED AND COMPARED WITH THE SOURCE PINK NOISE SIGNAL. (THE EQ OF THE CHANNEL WAS DELIBERATELY SWITCHED OUT).
EVERY CHANNEL BUSSED OUT TO EVERY BUSS IN A TOTALLY SATISFACTORY MANNER. IE MATCHED THE SOURCE SIGNAL IN BOTH FREQUENCY RESPONSE AND LEVEL. (CHANNEL 62 WAS AN EXCEPTION; IT DID NOT BUSS OUT TO E5 AT ALL).
I HAD POWERED UP THE BARGRAPH METERS ON THE CONSOLE AND VERIFIED THAT THE BUSSES READ ACCEPTABLY CORRECTLY SO AS TO BE ABLE TO USE THESE AS TEST METERS TO VERIFY ADDITIONAL OPERATIONS OF THE CHANNEL MODULES. AGAIN, PINK NOISE SOURCE, ALL BUSSES OUT, NOW SWITCHING EQ IN AND OUT AND PAN IN/OUT TO SEE THAT THERE WERE NO LEVEL DISCREPANCIES WITH EQ AND THAT THE PAN MODES WORKED CORRECTLY.
DISTORTION MEASUREMENTS.
THERE ARE 2 (AT LEAST) METHODS OF MEASURING AUDIO DISTORTION; TOTAL HARMONIC DISTORTION (THD) OR INTERMODULATION DISTORTION (IMD). THE MORE REVEALING METHOD IS IMD AND THE PREFERRED ONE IS SMPTE IMD. BASICALLY, IF THIS FIGURE IS BAD, IT SOUNDS BAD! I USED A NEUTRIK A2D AUDIO TEST SET.
I TESTED EVERY (AVAILABLE) CHANNEL, (137 OF 140) USING A +4DBU LINE LEVEL SIGNAL WITH THE FADER AT UNITY AND MEASURED CHANNEL DIRECT OUT. EVERY CHANNEL WAS .004% DISTORTION. JUST TO CHECK THAT I WAS ACTUALLY READING THE CHANNEL CORRECTLY, I INSERTED THE EQ INTO THE PATH, WHEREON THE READING WENT TO .007%
THERE WAS NO VARIATION; EVERY CHANNEL READ THE SAME.
IF ANY OF THE AUDIO PROCESSING HAD BEEN DAMAGED, WE WOULD HAVE EXPECTED TO SEE SOME VARIANCE OF THESE FIGURES RELATING TO THE GEOGRAPHY OF THE RACK LAYOUTS. IE, THE CARDS AT THE TOP OF THE RACKS WOULD BE MORE LIKELY TO BE DAMAGED HAD THERE HAD BEEN ANY HEAT ISSUES COMPARED TO THE CARDS LOWER DOWN. (THE RACKS ARE OVER 2M HIGH).
ALL THE CHANNELS WORKED CORRECTLY. (THE CAVEAT OF #62 NOTWITHSTANDING).
